The chill comes and goes. The rain sweeps in and across and out of the city, kissing the streets. This is El Niño: A continual unknowing, a cold, wet swath of weather that is, above all, relieving. I spend the summer months longing for weather like this. From March through October, I forget what rain sounds like, smells like, feels like. But now, finally, in the rain, I can breathe.

Of course, I worry that the city of Los Angeles still hasn’t figured out how to capture rain water, I dread the thought of all this much needed precipitation draining into the ocean, but I sigh and I forget. I imagine the rain is helping the drought. And I go to the market, even in the rain. I go hard on citrus season.

Piling as many different kinds of citrus as I can into my VitaMix has become a favorite pastime for me. Particularly in the winter, the juicy orbs evoke a mixture of sunshine and hydration that I find deeply necessary in the chill. Combined with turmeric and a few dashes of cayenne, this juice will quickly rev up your engines and get your ready for just about anything.

Turmeric is a crazy powerful anti-inflammatory, and also proffers a potent golden dye. It’ll stain your fingertips and just about anything else that it’s near as its beta carotene seeps into cell walls.

High vitamin C from all that citrus and zesty spice from cayenne will keep you healthy and warm, even in the coldest months. Fantasizing about warmth in the winter isn’t just a daydreamer’s luxury—our bodies need warming foods in order to maintain proper hormonal and metabolic functioning.

As such, the colder months may not be the best time to do juice cleanses and embark on raw food revolutions.Instead, when it comes to craving a good ole juice, I like to give my body something it can work with. Something warming even if it feels like a glass of summer sunshine.

The kicker? I add a pinch of good sea salt for extra hydration and electrolytes.

Drink up!
